Data Wins Turkey Trot at Freehold

Freehold Raceway hosted the annual “Turkey Trot” on Friday afternoon, sponsored by Peter Grandich & Co. It turned out to be a thriller, as Data won the race in a photo finish over Lionhead.
Sent off as the 4/1 third choice in the field of eight, Data left well from post position three, and pocketed up behind Lionhead. Driver “Irish Joe” Hanney stayed patient with his mount, keeping him on the pylons almost the whole way. Turning for home, Hanney angled Data out for a clear shot, but Lionhead remained clear until the last few strides. Data kept on coming, and got up in the last stride to win by a nose. He trotted the mile in 2:02.3 for owner Domenico Costagliola and trainer Anouk Busch.
Following the race, Grandich, along with Freehold general manager Howard Bruno, racing secretary Karen Fagliarone, and former New York Jet Fred Baxter, made the trophy and blanket presentation in the winner’s circle. Earlier in the day, Baxter signed autographs and took photos with Freehold racing fans.
Live racing continues at Freehold on Saturday, with a 12-race card beginning at 12:30 PM EST.
